History of Bollywood:

Previously referred to as Bombay Cinema, Bollywood is one of the largest Cinema industry in the world. If combined with Tamil, Telugu, and other industries, Indian Cinema is the largest film industry in film production. Bollywood embarked its way into the film industry with the silent movie Raja Harishchandra in 1913. By 1930, the industry produced 200 films per year. In the year 1931, the first sound movie Alam Ara by Ardeshir Irani was released. This movie was commercially successful and the demand for Bollywood movies increased. But the Indian cinema was buffeted by world war II, the independence movement, and the violence of the Partition. Despite the hard times between 1930 to 1940, the events during this time became the topic for movies. Kishan Kanhaiya in 1937 was the first Hindi color film. From late 1940 to 1960, it is regarded as the golden age of Bollywood as some of the best movies were made then. Pyaasa, Kagaz Ke Phool, Shree 420, Aan, etc were some examples of the masterpiece.

Mother India (1957was the first Indian film to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Movie which it lost by a single vote. In 1961, Ganga Jamuna brought forth the genre of dacoit movies which diverted Bollywood from conventional movies. Mughal-e-Azam (1960) was another epic movie of the golden era. Dilip Kumar, Raj Kapoor, Dev Anand, Guru Dutt were at their pinnacle whereas Suraiya, Nargis, Sumitra Devi, Madhubala, Meena Kumari, and Vyjayanthimala were deemed to be beautiful actresses.

Bollywood entered in a classic phase from 1970 to 1980. This era was dominated by musical romance films. Two screenwriters, Javed Akhtar, and Salim Khan revitalized the industry with their beautiful scripts. The early 1970s were full of gritty, crime-related films like Zanjeer(1973) and Deewar(1975). This was when

Amitabh Bachchan started his career. By the mid-70s, romantic movies paved the way for gritty violent one. There were movies that mixed melodrama, romance, comedy, and musical and were regarded as Masala movies. The first Masala Movie was Yaadon Ki Baarat(1973) which paved the way for other masala movies. Amar Akbar Anthony (1977) was the landmark. Another epic movie was Sholay(1975).

Since 1990 to till date, we have been a frequent viewer of New Bollywood movies Hindi cinema saw a stagnant period during the 1980s due to increasing violence. By 1990, Bollywood was rolling again. This era had all genres, be it comedy, romance, melodrama or any other. Shahrukh Khan ruled the 90s with his romantic movies. Amir Khan was youthful and Govinda was best in the comedy genre. Juhi Chawla, Kajol, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Sridevi, and several actresses were introduced into Bollywood and later became integral. The new Bollywood is a familiar film industry for us as we grew watching Bollywood. We will pursue to do so as long as they keep us entertained and it seems like they will reiterate the charisma if it dips even a little with their variety.
